In early childhood, a strong emotional connection is created between the child and the parents in the context of social-emotional development. This kind of connection leads to the development of attachment. Relationships with loved ones play an important role in adjustment and well-being. The internal working models will be formed as a result of the early relationships with the parents or primary caregivers. Numerous findings indicate that there is a relation between well-being and attachment later in adulthood, through which functional and healthy individuals are formed. The process of growing up brings more contact with others, towards whom individuals can develop attachment. Attachment is felt for romantic partners, teachers, close friends, as well as for coaches. Coaches can be strong role models for athletes. With their support and relationship based on trust, coaches can encourage athletes’ self-confidence. Many studies indicate that athletes see their coaches as an important figure of attachment. They develop closeness towards coaches and consider them a safe base for exploring the sports environment. Coaches have different roles in athletes’ life, which include physical preparation, organization and guidance. In addition, there are various styles of coaches' leadership, as well as the preferable qualities of coaches. There are certain differences in the development of attachment relationships depending on the coach’s gender. Implementation of the attachment theory has great potential in the sports environment. The concept of attachment in the context of sports and in the relationship with coaches has theoretical and practical importance, yet it is not sufficiently explored.
