Systematic doping of Russian athletes has led to Russia being deprived of 43 Olympic medals and several dozen medals from world championships, which is a huge number, as much as 30% higher than the total number of medals confiscated from the rest of the world. Russia is the country with the most competitors caught in doping scandals at the Olympic Games in the world, and that number is over two hundred athletes. Doping in Russia differs from the rest of the world because in this case doping was not initiated by athletes but by the state itself, which supplied illicit substances and gave them to its athletes. Violations of the rules have become so widespread in Russia that there have even been various attempts to sabotage ongoing investigations and manipulate data. WADA or the World Anti-Doping Agency then banned Russian athletes from participating in all major sporting events, including the Olympics, for a period of four years. This ban was later reduced by the Court of Arbitration for Sport to two years after Russia's appeals were filed, but under condition that Russian athletes could participate in international competitions only under a neutral flag and label. The doping program that has lasted since the time of the Soviet Union had to be stopped due to the anger of the international sports community and the actions of the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which played the most important role in the whole process of identifying and eliminating negative factors that brought medals to Russia. Vitaly Stepanov's statements tell us about the complexity of the problem, stating that even in WADA there are people who do not want the whole truth to be revealed due to their involvement in doping scandals, although the goal of every sports organization and official should be to eliminate doping from sport. Canadian lawyer Richard McLaren also made an incredible contribution to fair sports, publishing a 97 page report covering a large part of state-sponsored doping scandals and concluding that a huge number of positive samples in a wide range of sports were manipulated. There are no easy answers related to the Russian doping scandal, but as we can see sometimes it is necessary to make a series of difficult but fair decisions to get things back in balance, just as the Court of Arbitration for Sport did.
